Here's a fascinating article: German Town Without Cars Reading it put a smile on my face. I've always fantasized about living in a town where there were no
automobiles, where all transportation was either by foot, bike, or green mass transit. Apparently I'm not the only human to have fantasized about such a
thing.
Have you ever imagined what it would be like to live without a car in a place where you didn't need one? In imagining such a thing, what do you see as the biggest problem with such a scenario? What benefits do you see besides a significant decrease in air pollution, noise, and improvement in regards to safety? How conditioned are you to rely on a car to get anywhere? Do you live in a spread out suburb or rural area where a vehicle is a necessity? Have you ever lived in a dense urban setting where having a car is actually a liability?
Much of the world has been built up over the last hundred years with the automobile specifically in mind. Suburban sprawl has made us utterly reliant on cars. In the other thread I asked about the human population explosion. Well what about the automobile population explosion? Every year there are more and more and more cars--because we all need one--and our roads are getting more and more clogged and our air is getting more and more polluted. Are electric cars the answer or do we need to redesign how we live? What are your thoughts?
Freeways. How often do you drive on a freeway? I remember long ago when I would take a freeway every day to get to work. Now the closest freeway to me is over a hundred miles away and I haven't been on a freeway in almost a decade. Have you ever lived by a freeway? Did the constant traffic noise become natural to you? Have you ever stopped and listened to the noise of traffic?
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live within walking distance of your job, a grocery store, the local post office, the local library, the local movie theater, all the shops you might need, and still also be within walking distance of the peace and tranquility of nature?
Has anyone ever thought about any of this stuff?
