I have just finished with rather lengthy piece about the three numbers 1,4, and 7. I'm posting it here and hoping for input from the readers. I would appreciate any thoughts that might help me understand why they keep appearing in my conscious awareness.
ONE, FOUR, SEVEN
Beginning with a dream I had in 1984, I became aware of the numbers one, four, and seven. The dream was a set of three numbers of four digits each as shown here:
2116, 3100, 7162.
In accordance with the rules in the numerology book I was studying at the time, I reduced the numbers as follows: 2 + 1 + 1 + 6 = 10 and 1 + 0 = 1: 3 + 1 + 0 + 0 = 4: 7 + 1 + 6 + 2 = 16 and 1 + 6 = 7. Then by adding the 1 + 4 + 7 = 12 and 1 + 2 = 3. So, I started with three groups of numbers which added to 1, 4, and 7 which then added to 3. From 1984 until 2005, I asked numerologists and dream interpreters to help me find the meaning of the three numbers without ever finding a single reasonable explanation of them. Then in 2005, I met a psychic and I told her about the dream. I wrote the three four-digit numbers on a piece of paper and showed them to her. She looked at them for a minute, thought about them for another minute, and then asked, “What happened to you when you were seven and you felt completely abandoned and without a friend? And what happened to you when you were fourteen and felt the same way?”
There were two events during those two years which actually made me feel that way and both of them involved my father. Rather than go into the details, I will simply say that the psychic hit the nail on the head. However, there have been a number of appearances of the three digits in my life that continue to confound me. I grew up in a small town in south Texas and the first house my parents bought was at 417 Dallas Street. We did not have mail delivery so we had a box at the post office and it was box 174. The woman I married lived at 4711 Ave. G in Austin and she was born on July 3, 1941 or 7-3-41. My first phone number was GR7-4147. When my parents moved back to my mother’s home town, they lived on County Road 3147. I am member of the local Citizens on Patrol group and my ID number is 4107. My membership number on my supplementary insurance ends in 7104. I just mailed in my income tax return along with a check for $147.86. In addition, I frequently see license plates with those three numbers in a group, I get receipts at fast food restaurants and three times out of ten, my receipt number will be 147, 471, 174, 714, etc. This is more than would be likely in simple probability, so I figure there must be some significance in these numbers for me. However, if there is a lesson to be learned, I haven’t yet learned it or the numbers would not continue to prevail in my conscious awareness.
The numerology I learned is the alphabetic system most commonly used in the English speaking countries. However, while I was learning about the subject, I also read the Theoretic Arithmetic of the Pythagoreans which gives different meanings to the digits one through nine. In that version, one is the number for the Monad (God) and nine is the number for man. Assuming that this is the probable numerology in play during the time of John’s dream as recorded in the book of Revelation then 666, which is the number of the beast according to John, is actually the number of man when reduced to a single digit of 9. I find that appealing for a number of reasons. Man is a beast when the base instincts are not controlled. With the myriad examples of man’s inhumanity to man as shown in the various histories of mankind, then it is fairly easy to postulate the theory that man is the beast which we most need to fear. I find it amusing to note that FOX in numbers is 666 and that FOX News seems to be the primary source of misinformation while they are leading the sheep down the garden path of their truth. But I digress.
I have a total of 18 letters in my name. Seven of those letters have a value of one and four have a value of two. The other letters have values of three, four, five, eight, and nine. Note that there are no letters with a value of six or seven. The Soul’s Urge or Heart’s Desire is determined by the sum of the values of vowels in my name and that value is seven. The Expression or Personality is determined by the sum of the values of the consonants and that value is six in my name. The sum of all the letters in my name determines my Destiny and that value is four. My birth date determines the value of my Life’s Path and that value is also seven. The Soul’s Urge, Expression, Destiny, and Life Path numbers are those that tell more about an individual than any of the supplementary numbers which can be derived from reduced sections of the name.
One is the number of Individuation or Recognition of Self
Two is the number of Balance
Three is the number of Creativity or Expression of the Joy of Living
Four is the number of Harmony through Conflict
Five is the number of Creative Freedom
Six is the number of Home and Family or Service to a Small Group
Seven is the number of Spirituality through being Alone
Eight is the number of Power and Money
Nine is the number of End of a Cycle or Humanitarianism
Since my Life Path number is a Seven, I have read the description of a Seven Path and it is as follows: A person who is a Life Path 7 is a thinker. If your Life Path is a 7 you are wise and studious. You seek truth and wisdom in all that you do, and search for the underlying answers in everything. Your tendency is to be a perfectionist, and you expect the same from those around you. Others may see you as eccentric. (I don’t know about being wise, but I do spend a lot of time thinking and seeking answers to things that seem to unanswerable.)
You are most comfortable by yourself – a loner or introvert. You happily give up the stress and turmoil of a busy life in favor of a quiet, peaceful life of solitude. 7 is a spiritual number, and most 7′s are drawn to spiritual pursuits. Once you have committed to certain spirituality you devote yourself to it completely. (This fits me to a “t”. My spirituality is a solid belief in something beyond comprehension that loves me. It is my belief and I do not ever encourage anyone to believe as I do. I could be wrong.)
Your love of solitude can make it difficult for you to form close relationships. While you value your independence you may often feel lonely or isolated because you lack closeness with others. Because you spend so much time alone, you may lose your consideration for others and become inflexible. One of the challenges for you is to find a balance between maintaining your solitude while not becoming completely isolated. (Again, this is me. I have no close friends and I frequently feel alone because I don’t have anything in common with the people around me.)
Because of your intelligence and wisdom, you have the potential to do great things with your life if you stay focused. Good career choice for a 7 would be to become a scientist, researcher or inventor. (I blew this. My career was in manufacturing quality assurance and I have serious doubts about my wisdom.)
Soul’s Urge is also a seven and here is the explanation of that: With a number 7 Soul Urge you are very fond of reading,
and retreating to periods of being alone and away from the disruptions of the
outer world. You like to dream and develop your idealistic understandings, to
study and analyze, to gain knowledge and wisdom. You may be too laid back and
withdrawn to really succeed in the business world, and you will be much more
comfortable in circumstances that are tolerant of your reserve, your analytical
approach, and your desire to use your mind rather than your physical being. (My singular achievement in my career was to
become the corporate quality manager for a national company. Unless production has problems, quality
managers are pretty much loners.)
You are very timid around people that you don't know very well, so much so at times that casual conversation and social situations can be strained. You tend to repress your emotions to the extent that some people have a good bit of difficulty understanding you. You tend to be very selective with friends and you don't adapt to new environments or to new people very quickly. (Again, this fits me to a “t”.)
The negative traits of the 7 include becoming too much the introvert and isolated from others.
My Personality or Expression is a Six which is in direct conflict with my Soul’s Urge 7. Here is the description of a person with a 6 Personality: You are a loving and caring individual with a tendency to put the needs of others before those of yourself. You are responsible and trustworthy with a high regard for justice and honesty. Duty will follow you all your life and sometimes feel a little too much of a burden. You are artistic. Harmony and beauty are high on your list of priorities. You have musical talent but the creative talents of a 6 are sometimes left undeveloped or suppressed as a result of your tendency to sacrifice your time and pleasure to the service of others. You are highly creative in all areas of life, particularly the visual. You are also a talented business person and can work methodically toward the realization of your goals. (Only parts of this actually fit me. I do put the needs of others ahead of mine. If I didn’t do this, I would be living in Fort Davis, Texas and would probably be divorced. My musical talent was singing and I quit doing that when I left high school.)
You have a natural gift with flowers, gardens, and animals. Your love of children has caused numerologists to dub you the "Cosmic Mother or Cosmic Father". The very shape of the 6 resembles and symbolizes "Pregnant with Love". You are a natural counselor and healer. But you must be careful not to interfere with the freedom of others. You are recognized as an idealist, mainly regarding marriage, friendships and humanity. The 6 is the most balanced of all numbers, but also contains within itself the greatest paradoxes. It is as if opposite tendencies were tenuously poised. Because of its gift for harmonizing these opposites, you are uniquely qualified to handle and integrate contradictions within yourself. It is for this reason that 6s so frequently find themselves in the role of healers or counselors, creating a peace between opposing points of view, or internal conflicts within the self. (This fits my wife better than me. She is the eternal mother and likes flowers, gardens, and animals. I like dogs. My conversations with my children are brief while she may talk with them for hours. Perhaps it is this that she supplies to fulfill my need for expressing as a six.)
While you can be very idealistic, there may also be a temptation to acquire beautiful objects by improper means. You must also guard against other meddlesome behavior and domestic tyranny, or always having to have your own way in a family dispute. Conversely, you have it within yourself to understand another person's dilemma and come up with a creative solution. Your natural ability to give comfort and warmth can smooth over hurt feelings like a healing balm. You attract love and appreciation. And rightly so, because you give the same in return. (Also sounds more like my wife.)
You make an outstanding teacher (especially young children or special education), healer, counselor social worker, psychologist, artist, designer, gardener, florist, and farmer. You can be successful in business, especially those that involve dealing with people. (This also describes my wife better than me.)
The fourth important number is the Destiny and mine is a four: You are the bedrock of society, the foundation of any enterprise. You are an organizer and manager. Your approach to life and to problems is methodical and systematic. You are a builder and a doer. You turn dreams into reality. You possess a highly developed sense of structure. You enjoy management systems, and can carry out your well laid plans. You are not the type to embark on any trip without a map. You take your obligations and those of your family quite seriously. As a result, you are reliable and responsible. You enjoy seeing a project through from start to finish, but can become too narrowly focused. You put your nose to the grindstone and have a tendency to become a workaholic.
You are driven by contempt for all that is unstable, insecure, and unpredictable. You distrust the unconventional, preferring instead the tried-and-the-true. But this can make your endeavors move slowly and cause you much frustration, especially with the apparent limitations of your resources. At the same time, concern for the limitations of your resources causes you to be careful and cautious, shutting you out from possible shortcuts and creative solutions provided by more daring people around you. It is important that you recognize restrictions for what they are: guiding forces that are testing and directing you toward your goals. Your challenge is to be more imaginative and to attract more creative people into your life who can advise and inspire you. (This describes me in business very well. I did have a tendency to workaholism.)
In relationships, you tend to be somewhat moralistic. You are extremely honest and sincere. You have integrity and are trustworthy, but can also be rigid and stubborn. Don't let your strong likes and dislikes overrule your common sense and compassion. Be more understanding of others' shortcomings. Because you tend to focus on details, you can fall into a rut and become a little dull and overly serious. Often, people born with the 4 Expression need to lighten up and have more fun. In your conservative and careful way, you are good with money. You are very conscious of the balance between income and expenditures. You can limit your expenditures; saving money is important to you. (I was successful in my career and retired with sufficient income.)
You are a surprisingly good parent, and love to be involved with children. Somehow, you relate a little more than others to the innocence of children, perhaps seeing a good deal of yourself in them. You, too, are idealistic and respect the simplicity of children. Many accountants, bookkeepers, government officials, managers, and lawyers are born under the 4 Expression. You can be attracted to the arts and music, but will likely bring your love of structure and order to any artistic field. Classical music and opera are particularly appealing and inspiring for you. (I don’t know how good a parent I was, but all of my kids grew up without too much trouble and none of them became alcoholics, druggies, or criminals. They all can tell me they love me and seem to be sincere. I dearly love classical music, but don’t care for opera.)
You have a keen eye for detail. You have great stamina and can work conscientiously and persistently toward your goals. This eventually brings you success and standing in your community. (That’s why I got to be President of the Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association in my fourth year with the group.)
Now back to the subject of this writing. One, Four, and Seven are described below as general numbers without reference to a particular position in one’s numerology. I have included the information of my personal numbers for information about myself, but these three numbers are outside my personal numbers.
The primal force
Positive Characteristics: Individualistic and independent, showing leadership and drive. The 1 is masculine, focused, an originator and self-starter; it is also progressive, strong-willed, courageous, self-reliant and rebellious (in a constructive way). (I do not know why this number appeared in the dream, but I have spent a great deal of time in the past thirty years working on identification of self.)
Negative Characteristics: 1s can be stubborn, selfish, weak and undisciplined, or a pariah. (I can be stubborn and selfish, but don’t see myself as weak, undisciplined, or a pariah.)
The salt of the earth
Positive Characteristics: 4s are disciplined, strong, stable, pragmatic, down-to-earth, reliable, dependable, hard-working, extracting, precise, methodical, conscientious, frugal, devoted, patriotic and trustworthy! (WOW! If this applies to me, then I would make a great boy scout.)
Negative Characteristics: 4s pay for their stability and pragmatism by tending toward the boring side. This may express itself with a lack of imagination, emotions, empathy. 4s may not bother to put much care into their appearance, and their social awkwardness can make them seem vulgar, crude or jealous. (I may be boring, but I believe I have imagination, am emotional, and empathetic. As far as social awkwardness, I certainly am not vulgar, crude or jealous.)
Positive Characteristics: 7 isn't just a lucky number. It's also spiritual, intelligent, analytical, focused, introspective, studious, intuitive, knowledgeable, contemplative, serious, persevering, refined, and gracious and displays much inner wisdom. (My lucky number is 3. Refined and gracious? And there’s that wisdom thing again. I’m snobbish enough to think the other things describe me.)
Negative Characteristics: 7s can be aloof, distant, sarcastic, socially awkward, melancholic, and cowardly and, when they're at their worst, back-stabbers. (Aloof and distant do work for me sometimes, but I try not to be sarcastic or cowardly.)
Now having written all this, I do not know why the numbers 1, 4, and 7 keep appearing in my life, but I will continue to be aware of them. The feelings of being absolutely alone and without a friend when I was 7 and when I was 14 were when I resigned myself to being alone in times of crisis. In each case, nothing bad happened, but I was scared. Add-on: Today I picked up a book from the library that had been acquired from another library. The order number was 147074171. The mystery continues.
