So do you have any summer reading planned? The kind of book that you throw in the beach bag and open while out in the sun?

Do you tend to read different kinds of books than usual in the summer, lighter reading perhaps?

Or perhaps there is a book you read one summer that marked that particular year?

I tend to read at least on biography in the summer, possibly about a Hollywood silver screen legend. Natalie Wood was summer of 2002. Dalida(cult-followed egyptian-french torch singer) was summer or 1998. Perhaps this year I'll go for the history of London.

So what's your favorite summer reading?

I'm re-reading several of the books from THE OTHER BIBLE. Primary focus is to be on trying to understand the sayings of Jesus listed in the Gospel of Thomas. So far, I think I understand about twenty of the 114 sayings listed in the book. I'm also re-reading the Apochryphon of John which tells the story of creation in a far different way than what is described in Genesis. It raises a lot of questions. In the end, it comes down to "who do you believe?".

I'm also going to get into the Gospel of Mary Magadalene. I haven't yet read it, so I don't know what to expect.

I wrote this to my friend Magi728 a few days ago so will copy it here since it answers the question you posed Claudie as to what our summer reading shall be this year. I usually don't have any specific intention to read any kind of book for the summer as in being any different from any other time of the year, though. I always have one book in my end table by my chair that I am reading. I've waited a couple of years (had to read other books first) to dig into this one! The next book after this might be another Taylor Caldwell one actually, about a conversation with the devil. hehe

I bought books by a writer who was said to write from her own past life experiences, Taylor Caldwell, and began reading one in particular I've been excited about, "Dear and Glorious Physician" a couple of weeks ago. It's about the life of Saint Luke, Lucanus, who was not a Jew. It's fascinating! His first mentor, Keptah, a freedman of Chaldean (Babylonian) origin, has been teaching the young Lucanus about the art of medicine, and he's also a rather cryptic mystic figure. One scene in particular was of Keptah taking Lucanus to Antioch to a private residence where the *Brotherhood* gather, and they told Keptah that Lucanus is *one of them*, but he wouldn't be taught of them, he had his own journey to take. The place featured a solitary room where Lucanus was allowed to enter.....and a massive cross rising up from the middle of the room....which took on a glow.....and he was aware he was in a holy presence there with the cross. When Keptah returned, 3 men came into the room with him, witnessing Lucanus kneeling and hugging the base of the cross. They were.....the Magi....Kings. Brotherhood.

Well, I just finished Wayne Dyer's Power of Intention and I'm about to start Eckhart Tolle's New Earth. I've been so darn busy writing and working that I've had very little time to read. It's been a matter of a few pages here and a few pages there. Yesterday I had to return a couple of books to the library that I never had time to read. I guess I bit off more than I could chew.

I've been thinking about the seasonal aspect of reading and I've come to the conclusion that the seasons don't really have much effect on my reading--at least not in the last 15 years or so. Long ago, though, I used to go on reading binges in the summer, but it was rarely light reading.

I'm glad you mentioned biographies, Claudie. It's been quite a while since I've read one. It sounds quite appealing. I'll have to find where that area of the library is.

Barb, if you can ever find a copy, I think you would delight in reading Taylor Caldwell's book, The Romance of Atlantis. It's a book she wrote when she was 12 years old. Some say she channeled the book from a past-life she had during the Atlantean endtimes. The book ties in very accurately with what the Edgar Cayce Readings said about Atlantis. For a book written by a 12-year-old it is surprisingly well-written. Another hard-to-find Taylor Caldwell book, which I've never been able to find, is a short autobiography she wrote about her childhood growing up in the poverty of Appalachia. I can't remember the name of it. Taylor Caldwell was a truly remarkable person.

Seven, I hear there is a lot of wisdom in THOSE OTHER BOOKS. I hope you'll come back and share what you learned from the Gospel of Mary Magdalene.

I can't tell you how excited I am, White Feather, that you are reading "A New Earth". The miracle in this book is that it doesn't actually teach us something new, but it explains familiar material to us in such a way that we integrate and get it at a cellular level. I can't wait to read your impressions of it.

Barb I had never heard of Taylor Caldwell until today and a quick internet search showed me what a fascinating woman she was, happy reading and your comments and impressions will be welcome.

Finally, Seven, you're digging deep in ancient writings and it's a subject that is of great interest... again impressions welcome... please share the passages that strike you most.

Oh and Patty, from another thread I know you ordered "Eat, Pray, Love" so I hope you'll drop by and tell us about it.

Sorry, I don't trade books, but you can find the Apochryphon of John (aka Secret Book of John) on the net along with the Gospel of Thomas. I'm not sure if any of the other books from Nag Hammadi are on the net, but you might want to check.

Re: James Robinson translation -- I find that translations from a Christian viewpoint tend to be biased in the traditional Christian direction. I prefer translations without that particular bias, so I picked up a copy of THE OTHER BIBLE at Barnes and Noble. Differences in the translations from a Christian vs a nonChristian perspective are significant.

Everyone: One of the things all of you might be interested in is that, according to the Apochryphon of John, the God that created earth and man is not the IT you find in my posts when I refer to the ISNESS of all that is. Since the book is supposed to be the story of creation as told to John by Jesus, it raises some very interesting questions about theology. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading a different perspective than the one with which we were raised.

Seven, that's cool about not wanting to trade books. I am going to look for The Other Bible now that you brought up James Robinson's book being possibly colored too much from the Christian perspective. I always thought it was just simply a translation from the original language into English, but it's possible he did put things into a Christian slant.

I have often read from the apocryphal and other "excluded" texts, lots of websites out there that I have perused with glee and joy!

Just wanting to comment that I have just recently, finally, been given to understand why Peter & Gabriel's messages through me always ended with God Bless and Creator Bless, as though they were different....they are! I do understand that the Creator of this earth is not God as in "IT". In the Bible it also explains this in terms of Christ "of, by, and through whom all that is ....was created". The Elohim...God, plural.....Christ being a many-membered "Body".

I did not find Mary in my new version of THE OTHER BIBLE, so I looked for it online. It's there and here is one of the first parts. You may find it interesting.

Peter said to him, "Since you have explained everything to us, tell us this also: What is the sin of the world?" , The Savior said, " There is no sin, but it is you who make sin when you do the things that are like the nature of adultery, which is called 'sin.' That is why the Good came into your midst, to the (essence) of every nature, in order to restore it to its root." Then he continued and said, "That is why you' [become sick] and die, for [. ..] of the one who [. ..He who] , understands, let him understand. [Matter gave birth to] a passion that has no equal, which proceeded from (something) contrary to nature. Then there arise a disturbance in the whole body. That is why I said to you, 'Be of good courage,' and if you are discouraged (be) encouraged in the presence of the different forms of nature. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.'

I bolded the part I think most interesting, because it is what I believe. It is the same thing that was said by Ramtha who was one of my early teachers. I believe that I created the guilt for many of the things I have said, done, and thought in my life. Once I read this and came to the understanding that I wasn't guilty of anything and began to forgive myself, my health improved greatly. I also believe it is why I cry when I see Good Will Hunting and get to the point when the psychologist is telling the young man over and over that it isn't his fault.

I'm on the first part of the book chapter 10 and I must say, I'm weeping, laughing, jumping and shouting......what a book......it has touched me so deep......knowing that everything is working perfectly for me. I just finished the part where she petitions God and sees everyone signing the petition.....I LOVE IT !!!!!

I had to laugh at myself at the library this afternoon. I kept seeing books that I want to read and I'd pull them off the shelf. Before I knew it I had a stack of 7 books. Yeah right! Like I have time to read 7 books in the next two weeks. With two jobs, daily writing, a forum to visit, and a dog to walk, I'd be pretty lucky to get 2 books read in the next two weeks--and I still had one book left from last week that I just barely started (Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now).

So I put five of the books back and only checked out two; The Spontaneous Healing of Belief, by Gregg Braden and Stillness Speaks, by Eckhart Tolle. Stillness Speaks is just a small collection of short one or two paragraph snippets, which is just perfect for me. I can just pick it up when I have a few minutes here and there and get some inspiration. I guess we'll see which grabs my attention the most: The Spontaneous Healing of Belief or The Power of Now. One of those will be my main reading adventure for the next week. With Tolle's books I'm going backwards (from his newest to his oldest) and already in just a few pages I see there will be some repetition so I might go with Gregg Braden's book to break things up a bit.

And speaking of Tolle, I finished The New Earth several days ago and I must say it's one of the best books I've read in a very long time. I HUGELY recommend it! I have a feeling I'll be reading it again. I just love Mr. Tolle's perspectives. He's very special.

It's a rare talent to convey so much wisdom with so little words. Not that I don't enjoy your ramblings, White Feather, I look forward to them and I enjoy every word.

What I like most about "A New Earth" is the simplicity of it, how deeply spiritual we can be if we could just stop fussing and looking for inner peace in all the wrong places because we rely so much on our ego to show us the way...

So this summer's biography kind of made a leap for me at the bookstore yesterday... it's going to be Julie Andrews and it's an autobiography. There is a lightness, a purity in that woman that I find very inspiring.

Oh yippee! I thoroughly adore Julie Andrews! She has been one of my favorites for a very long time. (Despite the fact that I can't stand the movie, The Sound of Music. I'll watch or listen to anything else she's ever done, though.) I'm especially excited by the fact that it is an autobiography. Personally, I would rather hear her story directly from her. I hope you enjoy it and share your insights.

One of the poignant turning points of this book, Patty. And I happened to need to read it so thanks!

I am now enjoying Julie Andrew's autobiography very much. I have to laugh at what you said about "The Sound of Music". I used to detest it, and now own it and watch it every december sometimes during the holidays. I don't know why but that movie has become associated with Christmas for some strange reason.

It's a rare talent to convey so much wisdom with so little words. Not that I don't enjoy your ramblings, White Feather, I look forward to them and I enjoy every word. What I like most about "A New Earth" is the simplicity of it, how deeply spiritual we can be if we could just stop fussing and looking for inner peace in all the wrong places because we rely so much on our ego to show us the way... She has been one of my favorites for a very long time. (Despite the fact that I can't stand the movie, The Sound of Music. I'll watch or listen to anything else she's ever done, though.) I'm especially excited by the fact that it is an autobiography. Personally, I would rather hear her story directly from her. I hope you enjoy it and share your insights.

And I happened to need to read it so thanks! I am now enjoying Julie Andrew's autobiography very much. I have to laugh at what you said about "The Sound of Music". I used to detest it, and now own it and watch it every december sometimes during the holidays. I don't know why but that movie has become associated with Christmas for some strange reason.
