Important? Oh dear, nothing I say is important. It's just stuff that I say. Importance is so subjective and all things have as much importance as they wish. Importance is a judgment, in a way. It's certainly hierarchical. No, I never look for importance but rather see it in the little silly things in life. Something lying in the gutter on the street could have incredible importance if experienced at just the right time. Finding importance in the NOW makes a lot of small things more important. They divert our thinking and show us new doorways into beauty and joy. Sometimes, with little silly things, the importance doesn't come out until after the subject has been broached and engaged.

Anyway, in a certain book I read the other day by Tom Robbins, one of the characters fell in love with a podiatrist, who is one who examines and treats feet. The podiatrist told him that there are more podiatrists per capita in America than any other nation and the reason was because we tied our shoes too tightly. So it got me to thinking about how tightly I tie my shoes and I wasn't going to have those thoughts in private. I wanted to share it with everyone and make everyone else think about tying their shoes. I mean, seriously, I've never given it much thought until now after reading that in that book. So it took on a sudden whimsical importance. I've found that some of these importances are the best of all.

So what I realized is that I am probably somewhere between medium and tightly tied. But what is more important to me, however, is that both feet are tied at equivalent tightnesses. One foot can't be tied tighter than the other. That would throw me all askew. I'd be lopsided. It would be tragic.

Anyway, what I've noticed through careful self-examination is that if my two shoes are indeed unequally tied, I invariably unty the looser one and tie it tighter. I never untie the tightly tied one and tie it looser. I don't think I would ever have noticed that about myself if it wasn't for this book.

It also made me fondly remember those expensive Italian loafers I had way, way back then. I just had to stick my feet into those suckers. I never had to tie a thing! And they lasted forever! I wonder how many podiatrists they have per capita in Italy.

Feet have always been important to me--although I must say I can go months and even years without thinking about them too much. But every now and again they become suddenly important. To express that importance might lead to something fun. We are connected to so much through our feet. So much! If you agree wiggle your toes. Every time you wiggle your toes foot mojo is released. And an angel somewhere goes barefoot.

I want to hear how important feet and footwear are to others. I just know there are some stories out there. Go ahead and wiggle your toes and then let it all out.
